The client, a well known actress asked Quay2c to look at the new flat she had bought. The property was previously the doctors surgery of Dr Harold Moody 1882 - 1947, an early campaigner for racial equality. There is an English Heritage blue plaque on the main building saying that he both lived and worked there. The surgery conversion was only 44m2 and the configuration was very “corridor like”, with a walk in living room to the north facing street side of the building. However south facing gardens to the rear with limited aspect were a real potential to be realised.
As can be seen in the plans an entry lobby and study has been designed to the front with a stair up to a new bedroom and en suite bathroom. This presents itself to the front as a ”copy” of the two storey gabled garage and upper room to the east side of the front façade, to make a “balanced” “completion” as seen in the before and after pictures. With the narrowing width of the site an interesting consistent pitched roof was designed with a diminishing pitch height, fully exposed inside to make a light and airy space. This has a roof light installed in it to give borrowed light down the stair well to the ground floor.
To the rear a garden pavilion has been added to the existing back room. This makes a generous and light filled living / dining / kitchen. Sliding and bi-fold doors access the garden which is clad in “cleaver cut” sweet chestnut shingles in sympathy with the chestnut trees in the garden. The existing walls have been retained and clad over with insulation and horizontal timber cladding. The roofs throughout are of a weathered grey metal standing seam material while the existing tiled roof over the refurbished bathroom and small flexible storage space have been re-clad in slate.
Planning permission was granted in 2014, with Quay 2c overseeing construction works, by contractor TBA, from September 2015 - March 2016. Before and after “snaps” follow - awaiting professional photography once the garden matures.
Extensive refurbishment and extensions of garden flat.
