For his installation Dale Wilson has chosen to explore both the dimensions of the m2 gallery and the location surrounding it.
The work’s title ‘01:31:54’ (one hour, thirty-one minutes and fifty-four seconds) is a translation of the m2 gallery’s dimensions. This allusion to duration in the title gives a clue to the material used in making the artwork’s surface – magnetic audiotape. The limited capacity of the audiotape contrasts sharply with the time taken to produce the work; just as its machine-made aesthetic is at odds with the steady and meticulous labour taken to produce it.
Inspired by the play of light from the streetlamps, which cast a fractured orange glow on the street outside the gallery, Wilson’s composition reduces this personal and evocative material – audio recordings – into a mere surface or skin. The dissolving geometric and architectural forms are his attempt to capture the changing urban landscape around the gallery.
Dale Wilson was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1985, and grew up in Keighley, West Yorkshire. He graduated from Camberwell College of Art in 2009.
