Sacred White Elephant

Lord George Sanger, was a circus entrepreneur based in Margate in the late 19th Century. Sanger advertised the arrival of a sacred white elephant joining his menagerie, but to his shock when it arrived at the docks, the white elephant was a blotchy pink and grey colour. To save face Sanger had the poor creature whitewashed twice daily before it performed…......
This is the intriguing starting place for Julie Westbury’s new show in the gallery. Julie works with drawing, collage and photography in London and Ramsgate. Her work is informed by an eclectic knowledge of art history, which crosses all times and civilizations with an interest in both “high” and “low” culture.
