2002.01 Sternhall Lane
Sternhall Lane, Peckham, London SE15
Mixed Use Development of B1 Industrial, Live/Work & 11 Flats
Budget: 1,500,000
A private developer was introduced to us having seen Quay House. They aquired a 31 metre wide south facing street frontage on a lane off Peckham High Street and had experience of developing a live/work scheme nearby. Buildings of little architectural quality occupied the 22 - 25 metre deep site with a large two and half storey shed wall marking the northern back boundary to the site. The building fitted between a two storey terrace and a collection of 3/4 storey buildings.
As the site was deep and there was a precedent of buildings to the back of the site with no view to the north, the idea was to make a terrace of courtyard houses. The view would thus be internal to the core of the site with overlooking issues handled by having screen walls similar to the film used on buses designed by artists. The street facade has a grid of gold mosaic with south facing patio doors and a wrap over saw-tooth roof. The scheme is inspired by ideas about the theatre, Peckham High Street having a rich history of entertainment venues. The scheme gained planning consent in January 2004.
