Bellenden Road
Background and Brief
Jacqui Poncelet is an artist who also co-curated the ‘Pattern Crazy’ exhibition at the Crafts Council in London, which explains something of the interest of her work. She bought a classic 5m party wall to party wall three storey late Victorian building in the main street of the local Bellenden Road Regeneration Area. The ground floor was a plumber’s merchant with outbuildings at the back. The first phase of the work was to convert the upper two floors into a residence.
Having completed phase 1 of the work, there was a desire to replace the existing outhouses and extentions to the ground floor rear of the property. These would be flexible spaces to live and work in and take advantage of the secret garden to the back of the forty metre long plot. A new shopfront to attract a new leaseholder was also required along with a scheme to add a terrace and mezzanine space to the top floor living space.
Scheme
The fundamental briefing from the client was for lots of light and to prioritise planting.
Phase 1; Involved making a maisonette flat above the shop. Bathroom and Bedroom to the first floor and then opening up the top floor with rooflights to incorporate the “London” roof.
A new anodised aluminium shopfront with concertina doors, new lighting, signage and the tiled artwork to the front by Jacqui Poncelet was instigated as part of the shop refurbishment.
Phase 2; The general displacement of the old sheds seemed the best footprint for the new building to the rear and gave an intimate three sided courtyard.
To the south was a two storey party wall. The scale of this suggested that the new building should have a sloped roof covered in sedum; one storey to the north and two to the south with a sculptural rooflight at the end as an eyecatcher.
