Chancery Court
Background and Brief
Quay 2c obtained Planning application for this classic brownfield site in Manor Park in 2004 having previously been a disused vehicle repair garage. The site had limited access as its southern boundary backs onto a school. The private developer client was looking for flats to rent as key worker housing provision.
Scheme
We arranged the project around a central staircase with a mixture of one and two bedroomed flats to the ground and first floors. The Second floor has four maisonettes with a set back angled roof above giving a second bedroom to the top floor. The building is constructed using Solid pre-fabricated timber panels with a seedum roof. The floating roof is in zinc using a standing seam system while the walls are rendered. Sir John Heron was the local land owner, chancellor to Henry 8th and gives his name to the adjacent school. Taking from this the building is thus named Chancery Court. The costume and detailing of the period have been an inspiration to thinking through the materials and detailing with a plum coloured render tieing into the red brick and eclectic range of finishes in the street. This project was sold by the developer in the summer of 2007 to Swan Housing Association as the first solid timber structured building in the UK to be owned by a social housing provider.
