Handcroft Road, Croydon

Background and Brief

Quay2c were appointed by client Kitewood Ltd to look at the site in Handcroft Road, West Croydon in 2008. The brief was to design a high quality terrace of flats with a positive and interactive relationship with the street. By giving a clear definition to the frontage, this has resulted in a good, safe, green amenity space to the back. Quay 2c were also asked to bring their knowledge of innovative sustainable systems to the forefront of the design agenda.
The site was most recently occupied by a bakery depot, who used the single storey industrial buildings to store and distribute their product.

Scheme

The Scheme proposes 22 flats exclusively for affordable housing. The range of flats from one to four beds will give an excellent socially cohesive mix.
A principal design objective is to produce a highly sustainable building, using Quay 2c’s past experience of energy saving systems to the maximum. The project creates high quality flats by virtue of its clear urban design strategy, this allows them all to be double aspect and cross ventilated. All flats benefit from private amenity space in the form of patios, balconies or terraces as well as access to a secure, communal garden to the rear.
The scheme has been designed to achieve the high end of Code 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and won Planning Permission in December 2009.
