Laura Marley

Objects tell us about past environments, cultures, innovations and events and are statements of fact, yet interpretations of these are varied. I form my practice by recognizing and acknowledging what objects, their constituent materials and matter can say, working with their potential vocabulary. This allows communication in a physical and pragmatic way, a language without words. It also opens a dialogue existing between people and objects and reflects how these intense relationships make the intangible manifest.

Turning materials into objects gives us dominion over the world and allows the commitment of ideas into physical form through the human need to create and be heard. More recently I have become interested in how the latent performative qualities of the object can transcend the item itself and exist in other forms.

Laura Marley is an artist, living and working in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside. She recently completed her BA with honours from Chelsea College of Art and Design. Her work is based in memory and experience. By making instinctive deviations from the immediately familiar she pursues a greater understanding of the use and nature of material language.
